What we use today

Only cookies that are strictly necessary. These hold your authentication session, or your guest session if you are playing without an account, so you stay signed in between pages and so a game knows who you are. The check that you are a person on the sign-in forms, run by Cloudflare Turnstile, is strictly necessary in the same sense: it stops scripts creating accounts and guests in bulk. Without them the site cannot function, and under both the UK PECR and the EU ePrivacy Directive strictly necessary cookies do not require consent. Those two are the rules that govern what may be stored on your device, and they apply to you wherever we happen to be run from — which is South Africa, where POPIA governs what we then do with what we hold.

There are no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies and nothing that follows you to other sites. The one measurement we take beyond the games you play is a count of page views, and it sets no cookie at all — described in the next section.

Measuring visits without cookies

We count page views using Vercel Web Analytics, run by the company that hosts this site. It sets no cookie, stores nothing in your browser, and does not follow you to other sites. What it records is the page, the site that linked you here, and a coarse location and device type — aggregated, so that we can tell how many people arrived on a given day and which pages they left from.

Because it stores nothing on your device, it does not require consent under the UK PECR or the EU ePrivacy Directive. It is counting, not tracking, and it is deliberately the only measurement on the site that is not simply a record of the games you chose to play.

What changes when advertising is added

Ball Knowledge intends to show advertising, with a paid tier to remove it. Advertising cookies are not strictly necessary, so before any advert is served we will need a consent banner from a Google-certified Consent Management Platform implementing Consent Mode v2. Until that exists, no advertising runs.

This section is here so the plan is on the record: adverts do not go live before consent does.

Managing cookies

You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings. Blocking the authentication cookies will sign you out and prevent you from playing.
